Most people now agree that the US health care system is broken–we spend more per capita ($7026 in 2007) than any other country in the world on health care, with poorer health outcomes. 47 million people have no health insurance coverage and many more are under-insured. While there is a great deal of discussion right now about making health insurance coverage universal, it will be unaffordable and ineffective unless significant changes are made in how health care is delivered and what types of services are covered. While it is true that many Americans die due to lack of health care, it is equally true that many Americans die because of their health care. A recently published report, using official statistics, determined that nationwide almost 800,000 people a year die as a result of their health care, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Many more people are injured as a result of their health care, and the cost of these injuries is staggering.
My book, HEALTH CARE HIJACKED: MONEY, MEDICINE AND REAL REFORM, is the first book to take a comprehensive look at what has gone wrong and why and to propose a comprehensive set of solutions that will provide safer, more effective, less expensive alternatives while protecting the integrity of our health care system by adequately compensating health care providers. Not an academic treatise, this book will be a searing indictment of the health care industry and an impassioned plea for change.. While it will include an ample amount of facts and figures from well respected sources, it will also include interviews with health care industry insiders, patients who have been harmed by our current system, and reform advocates. It will also include hopeful examples of better ways of providing and financing health care.
Are you a patient who has been harmed by your health care? Do you have a success story to tell about using alternative health care after conventional health care failed? Are you an industry insider who is disgusted with what you've seen? Are you a health care reformer with some ideas about how to change things? Are you willing to contribute some time to do research for the book? Please email me at cperlin@nycap.rr.com with your stories and ideas.
